DNS Intermediate Course "C"

For therapists who have done the A and B standardized DNS courses or DNS Pediatrics 1 and DNS B.

DNS "C" Course Objectives

• Introduce advanced assessment methods – the integrated stabilizing system, locomotor stereotypes, respiratory stereotype

• Describe the kinesiology of muscle chains involved in locomotion: stepping forward and supporting function

• Discuss and workshop assessment and treatment of the pelvic girdle and hip joint: phylogenetic and ontogenetic aspects, anatomical parameters from developmental perspective, the most common pathological conditions – femoroacetabular impingement syndrome, arthritis, DNS assessment and treatment procedures

• Discuss and workshop assessment and treatment of the shoulder girdle: phylogenetic and ontogenetic aspects, anatomical parameters from developmental perspective, DNS assessment and treatment in shoulder girdle disorders - hemiplegic shoulder, frozen shoulder, impingement syndrome, SLAP lesion

• Discuss and workshop assessment and treatment of scoliosis: definition and classification, ontogenetic aspects leading to scoliotic development, risk factors, spine control in motor development, assessment of infants and adults with scoliosis and body asymmetry, bracing and DNS treatment positions and strategies

DNS "C" Course Objectives (continued)

• Discuss and workshop assessment and treatment of pelvic floor issues and women’s health: pelvic floor muscle function from developmental perspective; associated kinesiology between diaphragm and pelvic floor; typical postural disturbances, functional  trigger point chains, joint dysfunction and hypersensitive zones in gynaecological diagnoses; DNS assessment and rehabilitation for stress incontinence, anorectal dysfunction, amenorrhea and dysmenorrhea, functional sterility, pelvic organ prolapse and pelvic pain syndromes, vertebral-visceral relationships; rehabilitation for pregnant females

• Cover general DNS self-treatment advanced techniques

• Provide more complex clinical management explanation for clinicians to better integrate more advanced DNS protocols into regular practice.

• Establish individual goals (DNS understanding & skills) for students to be optimally prepared for the next level of training (Course “D” in Prague)

Optional Examinations

OPTIONAL EXAMINATION

Participants who would like to participate in the educational track towards becoming a certified practitioner can take this exam for an additional fee of 100 Euros.

The test will consist of an analysis of adult patients.  A CD of video will be given to participant for analysis.  Participants are required to return the test to the local instructor within a month after the course. Upon successful completion and passing of the test, a  Certificate of ACHIEVEMENT from Prague School of Rehabilitation will be awarded.

May only re-take the test 3 times.

The clinician would be required to repeat one or more courses, to be determined by the DNS committee and based upon weaknesses noted leading to failed testing, before re-qualifying for certification testing.

Course Instructor: Dr Michael Maxwell

Through his consistent and exceptional exposure to some of the world's most recognized clinicians and educators, 20 years in the trenches helping clients and patients reach their goals, and his dedication to providing exceptional and comprehensive care in clinical practice, Dr. Maxwell is well-positioned to provide outstanding clinical continuing education. And more importantly, he is honoured to do so.

Dr. Maxwell is Canada's only Certified Instructor for Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization according to Pavel Kolar. He is also Canada's only Certified Instructor for Michael Shacklock's Neurodynamics Solutions - Upper and Lower Quarter Courses.

Michael has been a fitness, health, exercise rehabilitation, and manual therapy nerd since 1998. As a personal trainer, strength and conditioning coach, kinesiologist, and Chiropractor, he has sought out key mentors, courses, and conferences to accelerate the acquisition of knowledge and skills necessary to help his clients and patients.

Frustrated by the lack of practical knowledge and skills provided in his Exercise Science undergraduate degree, and inspired by the extra-curricular conferences and courses he had previously attended, Dr. Maxwell began facilitating workshops and seminars that featured practical, hands-on content, taught by industry leaders. This is what led to the formation of Somatic Senses Education. Since 2003, Dr. Maxwell has organized well over 300 continuing education courses throughout Canada featuring industry leaders such as Lorimer Moseley, Donald Murphy, Stuart McGill, Pavel Kolar, and the outstanding Prague School Physio’s, Clayton Skaggs, Brett Winchester, Michael Shacklock, Dale Buchberger, Jack Miller, Clare Frank, Robert Lardner, Mark Finch, Charlie Weingroff, and many more! His mission is simple: provide evidence-informed, practical, and world-class continuing education featuring industry-leading clinicians, educators, and researchers, with the ultimate goal of improving the standards of patient care!

Dr. Maxwell currently works with a variety of patients including recreational and elite athletes, and non-athletes looking for fast results combined with long-term strategies for improved function and pain resolution. He has an extensive background in strength and conditioning and medical exercise. He is NCCP Level 1 Weightlifting certified and spent 10 years in the trenches as a strength and conditioning coach, medical exercise specialist, and Kinesiologist before he became a Chiropractor in 2007.
